Framework Laptop 16 - 6 month review

Got my Framework 16 with the AMD 7840HS and discrete GPU module back in August. After 6 months of daily use, here is my thorough review covering build quality, repairability, GPU module, battery life, and Linux compatibility.

Spoiler: I love it but it is not perfect.

How is the GPU module performance compared to a standard laptop with the same GPU? I have heard there is a thermal penalty.

The GPU module runs about 10-15% slower than the same chip in a traditional laptop due to the expansion bay thermal design. But you can swap it out later which is the whole point.

Battery life is my concern. How many hours are you getting with the discrete GPU?

About 5-6 hours with the dGPU on mixed use. On integrated graphics it jumps to 8-9 hours. Linux power management is good with TLP.

I looked at Framework but ended up with a ThinkPad T14s Gen 5. The build quality and keyboard are still unmatched. Framework will get there eventually.
