Pull a late-1990s iMac out of the closet today and it's basically a paperweight on the modern web. Most sites just won't load. The little padlock behind every "https" address, the encryption that guards almost everything online now, slowly locked these old machines out.
One developer decided that was unacceptable. He spent his nights and weekends getting a real, modern browser running on Classic Mac OS again.
It's called MacSurf, and the goal is stubborn. The modern web, on a 25-year-old Mac. Real CSS layouts, real JavaScript, native HTTPS, on a G3 with all of 64 MB of memory. Hackaday covered it on May 29, 2026, and the project has passed 150 stars on GitHub while retro-computing forums try it out.
Why old Macs went dark
Classic Mac OS, the system Apple ran before Mac OS X arrived in 2001, fell badly behind the web. Or rather, the web sprinted off and left it behind. The last browser that really tried, Classilla, limped along with updates until about 2014 and was declared unsupported in 2021.
Security was the real killer. As modern servers came to demand newer encryption, these machines slowly lost the ability to even start a conversation with them. TLS 1.0 and 1.1 were formally retired in 2021. Not load slowly, not render badly. Just nothing. A stock G3 today can barely reach a live site without help.
What MacSurf actually does
Here's the interesting part. No screenshot-streaming trick, no remote machine doing the real work and sending pictures back. Since its own encryption landed, it does not even need a proxy, though a fallback one still ships for older setups.
MacSurf is a native browser, built with the platform's own ancient tools, CodeWarrior 8, the Carbon API, QuickDraw, Open Transport. Under the hood it's a port of NetSurf, the famously lightweight open-source browser, with the Duktape engine running ES5 JavaScript.
That HTTPS piece is the showpiece. Since late May 2026, MacSurf speaks modern encryption on its own, through a stack the developer wrote called macTLS. It uses BearSSL for the math and carries 121 trust anchors from Mozilla's list, baked right into the browser.
No helper computer. Your old Mac does the real work itself.
The clever part
Now think about what it's running on, a 233 MHz G3 with no memory to spare and graphics routines from the late 1990s, where MacSurf spins and scales elements with an integer sine and cosine lookup table instead of leaning on floating-point math. Radial gradients get faked with a stack of nested ovals, painted one inside the next. All told, the browser handles around 150 CSS properties, some rendered fully, some only approximated on the old QuickDraw graphics. Frankly, it's a flex!
Don't get carried away
Let's be honest about where this sits. It's an early alpha, and the developer says so flatly. Most of the modern web won't work in it yet. No video. Nothing React-heavy. Expect hand-built pages, retro-style sites, and the strange thrill of watching JavaScript run on a late-1990s PowerPC chip.
So no, you're not going to live in this thing. That was never the point. The point is that a machine the world gave up on years ago can still do real browsing with modern encryption. Old hardware isn't dead. It's just waiting on someone stubborn.
