One of the loudest Bitcoin bulls spent years telling everyone one rule. Never sell. This week his own company sold.
Michael Saylor's company Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, sold 32 bitcoin for about $2.5 million. It surfaced in a routine company filing on Monday, and crypto Twitter erupted. It is the first time the largest public company holding bitcoin has sold any of its stash since 2022.
The promise he made
For years he repeated the same line. "Never sell your Bitcoin," he posted in February 2025. He called bitcoin "the exit strategy" in a 2024 interview. Diamond hands, laser eyes, the whole bit.

What he actually sold
The headlines skip the size. 32 coins is almost nothing next to the more than 843,000 bitcoin Strategy still holds, so the sale was 0.0038% of the pile. It sold at around $77,135 a coin, above Strategy's average cost and above where bitcoin traded when the news hit on Monday. The company sold high.
The reason is new. Strategy says the cash goes to its dividend bills.
The biggest of those bills is its preferred stock, including a class called STRC that pays 11.5% a year, paid monthly. $2.5 million does not come close to covering it. Strategy owes hundreds of millions a year in dividends, so 32 coins funds almost none of it.
The rule changed
In February 2026, four months before the sale, Saylor posted his "Rules of Bitcoin." Rule one, buy bitcoin. Rule two, do not sell the bitcoin.

On the May earnings call, the rule bent. "We will probably sell some bitcoin to pay a dividend just to inoculate the market and send the message that we did it," he told investors. That last step is selling, the exact thing he told everyone never to do.
Two days later he posted a new line. "Buy more bitcoin than you sell." "Never sell" had become "sell less than you buy." Those are not the same promise.

The coins are nothing, the signal is not
The coins do not matter. The signal does. Saylor spent years telling followers to hold through every crash. Now one of the loudest voices in crypto has admitted his own company will sell bitcoin to cover its dividend bills.
Markets reacted fast. Strategy stock slid about 6% after the filing. Bitcoin briefly fell to around $71,400 the same day, amid broader market weakness. A Polymarket bet on whether Strategy had sold by May 31 turned into a roughly $14 million mess. Bulls say it is nothing. Critics say Saylor just confirmed the doubt. 32 coins will not break anything. The broken promise might.
