If you have an adult PlayStation account in the UK, Sony can block your voice chat, Discord voice, and game broadcasts until you prove how old you are.
PlayStation's UK help page says adult accounts set up in the UK may have to pass an age check from June 2026. A company called Yoti runs the check, using your phone number, a face scan, or a photo of your ID.
Chat is not a small extra on a console. It is how friends jump into the same game and how players plan what they are doing. Putting all of that behind one check is a big deal, and the help page covers retrying a method but does not say what an adult can do if the check still turns them down.

The GrapheneOS scare
A screenshot in the GrapheneOS forum claimed Yoti had flagged a phone running GrapheneOS, a privacy-focused version of Android, and reported the owner to the authorities. That would be alarming if it were true. It does not appear to be.
Yoti said on June 8 that it does not report anyone to the authorities over their phone or which operating system they run, and that the email in the screenshot did not match anything in its records. So the scary part looks like a false alarm.
But it leaves a fair question. Privacy-phone owners want to know if an age checker can quietly turn them down over their phone, browser, number, or ID without saying which one was the problem. On a PlayStation account, that can be the difference between keeping voice chat and losing it until the check is done.

Just tell people what failed
Apps can already tell which operating system a phone runs through checks, GrapheneOS says, and its added security is not what makes the phone detectable. Its own guide shows app makers how to spot it and keep supporting it.
Sony does not have to reveal every security signal, and Yoti does not have to hand out a guide for sneaking past age gates. But they should tell a person whether it was the phone number, the face scan, the ID, the browser, or the device that tripped the check.
These checks already ask for your face or a photo of your ID. That is a lot. An error that will not even say which part failed is not good enough.
