A Twitch streamer nearly slammed into an SUV while broadcasting from behind the wheel, and her whole audience watched it happen. She had glanced at her chat, drifted while changing lanes, and only just missed the other car. Twitch banned her. She was streaming again about a day later.
The streamer is ExtraEmily, whose real name is Emily Xuechun Zhang. She is a popular IRL streamer, the kind who broadcasts daily life instead of playing games, and the near miss happened live in early July. She apologized and promised to cut back on driving streams. What set people off was the punishment: one day off for nearly causing a crash struck a lot of other creators as far too soft.
The rules don't really ban it
Twitch's rules do not flat-out forbid streaming while driving. They ban "dangerous or distracted driving" and using a phone at the wheel. ExtraEmily broke that rule on camera and was back online roughly a day later.
Then there is Asian Andy. Twitch banned him in 2017 for driving, streaming, and eating chicken nuggets, and nine years later he is still banned. "Bro 9 years I'm still banned for eating chicken nuggets and driving," he posted. "Twitch pls." One IRL streamer eats a nugget at the wheel and is gone for nearly a decade. A bigger star nearly causes a wreck and is back within a day.
The push to ban it outright
The loudest voice for a hard rule is Asmongold, who helped start OTK, the media group ExtraEmily belongs to. He says Twitch should ban driving streams for good, and that anyone who wants to film in a car should order an Uber. The complaints kept coming: on July 5, another streamer, Kaceytron, was banned after footage showed her appearing to drink and smoke before driving, though she insisted on stream that she was not drunk.
To critics like Asmongold and Asian Andy, none of this is about one bad lane change. It looks like a platform that writes a safety rule, then bends it for its biggest names. Until that changes, many creators worry the next near-crash is only a matter of time, with the audience watching live.
