A few settings your internet provider left wrong are quietly slowing down your Wi-Fi right now, and each fix takes about five minutes. The box they handed you works. It just works the safe, boring way that keeps the most homes from calling support, not the way that gives you fast, reliable internet. Nobody changes the defaults, so almost every home runs the same slightly broken setup.
Here are the ones that actually matter. Fair warning first: some of these depend on your gear, and not every router lets you reach these settings. If yours hides them, that itself tells you something.
Pick your own 2.4GHz channel
Wi-Fi runs on two main bands, or lanes: 2.4GHz reaches farther through walls, and 5GHz is faster but shorter range. The slower 2.4GHz lane has only three channels (a channel is the exact slice of a band your router broadcasts on) that don't step on each other: 1, 6, and 11. Your neighbors share those same three. Set to "auto," your router guesses the quietest one the second it powers on, then never looks again as the building fills up.
The fix is dead simple. Install a free Wi-Fi scanner app, walk around, and see which of 1, 6, or 11 is least crowded. Lock your router to it by hand. In an apartment, this one change alone can fix half your dead spots.

Narrow your 5GHz channel in a crowd
5GHz is the fast lane, and wider settings (80MHz, 160MHz) sound better on the box. They aren't, not in a packed building. Wide channels overlap with every neighbor running wide channels too, so everyone talks over everyone, devices keep resending data, and your real speed drops below what a narrower setting would give. Counterintuitive, yeah, but true.
In a dense apartment, drop your 5GHz width to 40MHz, or even 20MHz if it's brutal. You give up a top speed you were never actually hitting and get steadier internet instead. In a house with no close neighbors? Leave it at 80. Match the setting to your building.
Stop mixing old and new security
Most routers offer "WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode," where WPA2 and WPA3 are just two versions of Wi-Fi's lock, the new one being much harder to crack. Mixed mode lets old and new gear share one network. Convenient, but here's the catch: the whole network drops to the weaker WPA2 rules to keep your oldest device happy, probably a smart bulb or some printer from 2017. So your phone and laptop inherit security built for a light bulb. This is the wrong trade.
Run two networks instead. One clean WPA3-only network for modern stuff, and a separate WPA2 one, different password, for the legacy junk. Actually, while you're in there, flip on automatic firmware updates too; firmware is the router's built-in software, and outdated firmware is how most home routers get hacked.

Split your devices apart
Your laptop, phone, TV, smart fridge, robot vacuum, and that cheap Wi-Fi plug from Amazon all sit on one network, which means they can all reach each other. Bad idea. The fridge has no business scanning your laptop, and the vacuum shouldn't see your work files. Cheap smart gadgets are the easiest thing in your home to break into.
The fix is to keep them apart. At a minimum: a "main" network for devices you trust, a separate "guest" network for visitors, and ideally a third for all the cloud-connected gadgets you don't fully trust. Most decent routers can run several networks at once and wall them off from each other. If your provider's box can't do even that, honestly, buy your own; a $100 Asus or a $150 Ubiquiti unit beats almost any rental.

Move the signal, don't just blast it
Your router lives wherever the internet cable enters the house, usually a closet, almost never the middle of where you actually live. Signal fades fast through walls and floors. The far bedroom gets weak bars, slow speeds, dropped video calls.
Best fix by far is a second access point at the far end, fed by an Ethernet cable through the wall. Can't run cable? MoCA adapters reuse your home's existing coax TV wiring and get close to wired speed. Mesh kits (Eero, Orbi, Deco) are the plug-and-play option, but each wireless hop adds lag and roughly halves your speed. A wired access point wins every single time.
Two free switches to flip
Two settings ship turned off on most routers. Band steering nudges phones and laptops onto the faster 5GHz lane when the signal is strong, keeping your quick devices off the slow band. The other is DFS, which simply unlocks extra 5GHz channels that most cheap gear ignores, so less of your neighborhood crowds the same few lanes. Got a newer router with a 6GHz band (Wi-Fi 6E or 7)? That's an even faster, almost-empty lane, just short range; great for a device sitting near the router.
None of this is hard. Picking a channel takes five minutes, splitting networks maybe five more, and a wired access point an afternoon if the cable run is easy. The defaults aren't your friend. They're just the defaults, set for the average house, not yours.
